A women’s rowing team works their way past a newly built mansion on the banks of the Manatee River near Fort Hamer. Just five years ago this was a mosquito infested salt marsh. This property is now worth about $1.5 million. It sits across the river from the original location of Fort Hamer. Fort Hamer was a military fortification during the Florida Seminole Wars and is a starting point of the Trail of Tears. Seminoles were shipped by boat to Egmont Key and then on to the Mississippi Delta where they eventually made it up to a reservation in Oklahoma.
The rowing team is likely from the Northeast. Schools such as Harvard and George Washington use the calm (and relatively warm) waters as a training site in the winter months.
